At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.

We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

Why you can trust Insurify: Insurify’s expert insurance writers and editors operate independently of our insurance partners. As an independent agent and insurance comparison website, we make money through commissions from insurers. But that does not influence any editorial content, including reviews. Learn more.

Bordered by Canada, New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, Vermont has a rich history and plenty of natural beauty. Forests cover about 70% of the state, and its landscape includes 67 mountains, inspiring the state’s French name “Les Monts Verts,” or “Green Mountains.”

Vermont drivers pay some of the cheapest car insurance rates in the country, likely in part because of the state’s small size. In addition, the state boasts relatively high seat belt usage.[1] But even in a state with great rates and conscious drivers, the insurance company you work with can have a big effect on your costs.

Quick Facts
  • Vermont drivers pay $213 per month for full-coverage car insurance, nearly 16% less than the national average.

  • Some of the cheapest car insurance companies in Vermont include Safeco, Liberty Mutual, and Dairyland.

  • The average liability-only premium of $87 in New Hampshire is lower than Vermont’s liability-only rate of $100. But the average of $418 in neighboring New York is significantly higher.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Vermont

Liability-only car insurance covers both property damage and bodily injury liability. If you cause an accident, this type of insurance will help you pay for repair costs and medical bills of the other parties involved.

Notably, liability coverage won’t help you pay for your own medical expenses or vehicle repairs. This more limited coverage often comes with the lowest rates.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Vermont

Full-coverage auto insurance provides comprehensive and collision coverage, as well as liability coverage. After a car accident, collision coverage helps you pay to repair or replace your own vehicle. If something other than an accident, like a hailstorm or fallen tree, damages your vehicle, comprehensive insurance will help you get back on the road.[2]

With coverage from all angles, you’ll have more financial protection after an incident. Some drivers, like those who lease or finance their vehicle, may be required to carry this bolstered coverage. However, many drivers who aren’t required to carry this coverage may want to pay for the protection it provides.

Car insurance requirements in Vermont

Vermont law requires Green Mountain State drivers to carry a minimum amount of car insurance. Without this minimum level of coverage, it’s illegal to drive on public roadways.

Here’s a breakdown of the coverage minimums in this at-fault state:[3]

CoverageMinimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$10,000

Carrying the minimum coverage determined by state law is a good place to start. But many drivers choose to carry more than the minimum liability coverage. Some optional protections you might opt for include:

illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/665da91bf7/comprehensive-coverage.svg

Comprehensive coverage

If your car is damaged by anything other than a collision, comprehensive coverage can help you pay for the repairs. Possible incidents include fire, vandalism, and natural disasters.

illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/169fdfde11/liability-coverage.svg

Collision coverage

If you get in an accident, collision insurance will help you pay for repairs to your own vehicle.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

If you’re in an accident with a driver who isn’t carrying enough insurance, uninsured motorist coverage can help minimize the financial damages.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Drivers without an incident on their driving record tend to pay the cheapest car insurance rates. But if you make a mistake, that incident can lead to higher auto insurance premiums. For example, drivers with speeding tickets, driving under the influence, and at-fault accidents tend to pay more for insurance than drivers with a clean record.[4]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Speeding down a mountain road is an easy mistake to make. While the cost of the mistake starts with your ticket fine, the costs don’t end there. Instead, you’ll likely encounter higher insurance premiums due to the perceived risk insurers associate with speeding tickets.

Cheapest car insurance for teens

Teen drivers haven’t spent too much time behind the wheel. Most insurance companies account for this lack of experience with higher insurance premiums.[5]

While young drivers tend to pay more for car insurance, there’s no reason to overpay. As a teen driver, consider staying on your parents’ insurance, maintaining good grades, taking an approved defensive driving course, and choosing a safe vehicle to minimize your car insurance costs.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Vermont

“A driver can save money on car insurance by reviewing coverage, pricing, and adjusting limits such as increasing deductibles or applying professional discounts,” says Nick Schrader, insurance agent and owner of Second Western Insurance.

Here’s a closer look at some of the savings strategies he recommends:

  • Increase your deductible. A higher deductible often leads to a lower insurance premium. If you can afford the higher deductible, making this switch can lead to savings.

  • Seek out discounts. Many insurance companies offer a suite of discounts to help you lower your rates. Some popular discounts are available for safe drivers, professional organization members, and good students.

  • Shop around. Every insurance company has a slightly different method of determining your insurance premiums. This can lead to significantly different rates across insurance companies. If possible, compare multiple quotes online to lock in the cheapest rates for your situation.

  • Stick to the minimums. Carrying the minimum amount of liability insurance won’t offer as much protection as full-coverage insurance. But if you want to keep your insurance costs lower, the average car insurance premiums are lower with minimal insurance.

Vermont car insurance quotes by credit tier

Vermont is one of several states that prohibits insurance companies from using a lack of credit history as a factor in your insurance premiums.[6]

However, your credit score can still have an effect on rates. In general, drivers with excellent or good credit scores pay less for car insurance than drivers with poor credit scores.

If you have poor credit, giving it a boost could help you lock in cheaper auto insurance rates. A few strategies to improve your credit include paying your bills on time and checking your credit report for errors.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
