Maine boasts a ruggedly beautiful coastline, stretching over 3,500 miles. When you venture away from the coast, you’ll find more than 21,000 miles of public highways to explore, which is more than any other New England state. The extensive roadways and risks that come with coastal living may affect car insurance costs for the state’s drivers.

Although Maine drivers face insurance rates that are about 11% higher than the national average, they can still find affordable, quality coverage through insurers like USAA, Travelers, and Nationwide. But auto insurance premiums vary based on driving record, location, age, gender, marital status, and more.

This article is your guide to average auto insurance rates across Maine to help you find the best policy for your situation.

Quick Facts
  • Much of Maine is rural, and vehicle collisions with wildlife are common; between 2017 and 2021, collisions with deer accounted for nearly 17% of the state’s accidents.[1]

  • On average, full-coverage car insurance in Maine costs $205 per month, and liability-only policies cost $103.

  • USAA is one of the cheapest auto insurers in Maine for liability-only insurance.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Maine

Liability car insurance covers damages and bodily injuries you cause to other parties during a car accident. This bare-bones insurance option is often the cheapest. However, you’ll give up the financial protection that comes with more robust coverage.

For example, after an at-fault accident, your liability insurance policy can help you pay for the medical bills and repair costs of the other party. But if their damages exceed your policy’s liability limits, you could be responsible for the balance. And you’ll be on the hook for any repair costs related to your own vehicle and medical expenses.

Here’s a closer look at the cheapest options for liability coverage in Maine:

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Maine

A full-coverage car insurance policy, which includes both comprehensive and collision insurance, provides enhanced financial protection. After an incident, collision coverage can help you pay for repair or replacement costs of your own vehicle. And comprehensive coverage can pay for non-accident damages, such as from hail or vandalism.

If you lease or finance your vehicle, your leasing company or lender will require you to carry full coverage. But even drivers who aren’t required to carry this coverage might want to pay for the additional protection.

Car insurance requirements in Maine

Maine requires drivers to carry a minimum level of liability car insurance.[2] Here are the requirements:

illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/f2ca9fa443/protection-for-passengers.svg

Bodily injury liability coverage

Bodily injury liability coverage pays for the medical costs of the other drivers and their passengers if you cause an accident. Maine requires drivers to have:

  • $50,000 per person

  • $100,000 per accident

illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/7b43b14514/damage-from-aircraft.svg

Property damage liability coverage

If you cause an accident, property damage liability coverage can pay to repair or replace the vehicle of the not-at-fault driver. Maine requires you to have $25,000 of property damage liability, but keep in mind that limit may not be enough to cover the cost of a totaled car, especially if it’s a new or luxury vehicle.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

Although Maine law requires all drivers to have car insurance, about 5% of the state’s drivers forgo coverage.[3] Uninsured motorist coverage can help pay for your damages and injuries if an uninsured driver causes an accident. Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play if you’re hit by a driver whose liability limits are too low to fully cover your costs. Maine’s UM/UIM limits are:

  • $50,000 per person

  • $100,000 per accident

illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/4c9753bdbe/medical-payments.svg

Medical payments coverage

Also known as MedPay, medical payments coverage can help pay for accident-related medical bills for you and your passengers. Maine requires drivers to carry at least $2,000 per person of MedPay.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

It’s easy to make mistakes on the road. But a mistake can lead to increased car insurance costs for the long term.

Drivers with a clean driving record tend to pay less for car insurance than drivers with a driving violation, including speeding tickets, driving under the influence, and at-fault accidents. In general, the severity of the offense affects just how much your rate will increase.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI

While many states refer to impaired driving as a DUI (driving under the influence) or a DWI (driving while intoxicated), in Maine the offense is called an OUI (operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol).[4]

As one of the most serious moving violations, an OUI usually comes with higher car insurance premiums. Drivers with an OUI typically pay more than drivers with other types of incidents on their records, like a speeding ticket.

The table below shows how an OUI can affect car insurance quotes for Maine drivers.

Cheapest car insurance for teens in Maine

With minimal experience behind the wheel, teen drivers represent a risk to auto insurance companies. Most young drivers face higher premiums than their more mature counterparts. It’s impossible to completely negate your age as a determining factor for rates. However, teen drivers don’t have to overpay.

As a young driver, some ways to lower your car insurance costs include getting good grades, raising your deductible, and driving a safer vehicle. Additionally, comparing rates across multiple insurance companies can help you lock in the best rates for your situation.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Maine

Drivers in the Pine Tree State can’t avoid paying for car insurance. But the good news is that you don’t have to overpay. These strategies can help you lock in cheap car insurance:

  • Ask for discounts. Discounts are available through most insurance companies. Don’t hesitate to ask if you qualify for the lowest rates.

  • Shop around. Everyone has a unique situation, which affects your insurance premiums differently at different insurance companies. Shopping around can help you find cheap auto insurance for your situation.

  • Increase your deductible. Most insurers compensate for a higher deductible with a lower car insurance premium. If a higher deductible for full-coverage insurance fits into your finances, consider raising it.

  • Bundle insurance products. When you purchase multiple types of insurance through the same insurer, it might offer you a bundling discount.

Maine car insurance quotes by credit tier

Maine allows insurance companies to consider your credit information when determining premiums. Drivers with a fair or poor credit score generally pay higher rates for car insurance than drivers with an excellent or good credit score. In turn, raising your credit score can help you lower your auto insurance costs.

Some strategies to help you improve your credit score include paying down debt, making on-time bill payments, and removing any mistakes from your credit report.

Maine car insurance FAQs

Maine drivers face some unique challenges on the road, considering the state’s rural areas, coastal region, and abundant wildlife. Road conditions factor into car insurance rates, and you should take them into account when shopping for car insurance.

Here’s some additional information on Maine car insurance to help.

  • How much is car insurance in Maine?

The overall cost of car insurance in Maine is $154 per month, or $1,848 per year. On average, a full-coverage policy in the state costs $205 per month, and a liability-only policy costs $103 per month.

  • What are the best car insurance companies in Maine?

Travelers, USAA, and State Farm are among the best insurers for Maine drivers. State Farm has an Insurify Quality Score of 4.4, while USAA and Travelers have scores of 4.3 and 4.2, respectively. The score reflects a company’s overall quality, customer service, and affordability.

  • Does Maine require car insurance?

Yes, the state of Maine requires all drivers to carry a minimum level of car insurance. The state’s requirements are a bit more robust than in some other states. In addition to a minimum amount of liability coverage, Maine also requires drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and medical payments coverage.

  • Is Maine a no-fault state?

No. Maine is an at-fault state. A driver who causes an accident will be responsible for paying for damages and medical costs of the other drivers and their passengers. Insured drivers can rely on their liability coverage to pay at least some, if not all, of the costs they’re liable for — up to their policy’s coverage limits. Uninsured drivers, or drivers whose liability limits fall short of the damage amount they’re liable for, could be on the hook to pay for some or all of the damages out of pocket.

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
