We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.

We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. How to shop for the best car insurance in Dallas

When it comes to securing car insurance, it’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure you’re getting the best deal possible.

  1. Research insurers thoroughly. Take the time to review each company’s offerings and check out customer reviews. You can also poke around their website or chat with an insurance agent to get a better understanding of what potential discounts they may offer.

  2. Confirm licensing. It’s also crucial to verify that any insurance company you’re considering is licensed to operate in your state. This will save you time and energy, as you won’t waste any time requesting quotes from companies that can’t provide coverage to you.

  3. Get quotes. Be sure to fully understand how much coverage you need, and request quotes for that specific amount from each insurer. Don’t just choose the company with the lowest price; instead, consider the coverage level you desire and choose the one that offers the best price for that level of coverage. An online comparison tool is a great way to streamline this process and ensure you’re making an informed decision.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Dallas

If you’re looking to save on car insurance in Dallas, consider some of these tips for finding more affordable policies:

  • Ask about discounts. First, don’t hesitate to ask your insurance company for discounts. You may be eligible for discounts such as loyalty and paperless discounts, which could lower your overall insurance premium.

  • Choose a less expensive car. If you’re about to buy a new car, consider buying a less expensive car. Luxury cars are more expensive to insure, so opting for a less pricey car can help you find a more affordable policy.

  • Bundle different policies. Most car insurance companies offer homeowners insurance too, and getting both policies from the same insurer can result in reduced rates.

  • Shop around for the best rates. Before finalizing any policy, make sure to shop around for the best rates. Get quotes from multiple car insurance companies to find the coverage and price that suit your budget the best.

Liability-only vs. full-coverage insurance in Texas

Every state has a different minimum liability auto insurance requirement. In Texas, drivers must have a minimum of $30,000 in liability coverage for each injured person, up to a total of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident. A liability-only policy covers damages or injuries you cause to others in an accident, but it doesn’t cover any of your damages or injuries. In other words, it provides protection for other people and their property, but not for you.

Liability-only insurance may make sense for a driver when they have an older or less valuable car, are on a tight budget, or don’t have a lot of assets to protect. For a higher level of protection, drivers can look into full-coverage insurance, which includes collision and comprehensive coverage.

Collision covers damage to your own car in an accident, while comprehensive coverage is for damage from noncollision incidents, such as theft, vandalism, or natural disasters. It’s generally a good idea to have full coverage if you have a newer or more valuable car, are financing or leasing your car, or have a lot of assets to protect.

Here’s a glimpse at how the cost of liability-only coverage can compare to full-coverage policies from different insurance companies in Dallas.

Texas car insurance rates by driving and accident history

Your driving history plays a significant role in determining your car insurance costs. Insurance companies consider the likelihood of your filing a claim when determining your rates. A history of infractions can also be an indicator of increased risk.

If you have a clean driving record, meaning no at-fault accidents or speeding tickets, you’re typically viewed as a low-risk driver and are more likely to receive affordable rates. Insurance companies see these drivers as less likely to file claims and therefore offer lower rates.

On the other hand, if you have a history of accidents, tickets, or other violations (like driving under the influence), your rates are likely to be higher. Insurance companies view drivers with these infractions as higher-risk and more likely to file a claim. As a result, they charge higher rates to offset this increased risk.

It’s important to note that every insurance company has its own criteria for determining rates, so it’s always a good idea to shop around for car insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. Remember that safe driving habits not only keep you and others safe on the road but can also lead to more affordable car insurance rates.

Here’s a look at average monthly quotes for the cheapest car insurance in Texas based on driving and accident history.

Dallas car insurance quotes by credit tier

Many auto insurance companies rely on consumer credit information to determine car insurance premiums. By analyzing credit behaviors, insurers can gauge the likelihood of a policyholder filing an insurance claim.

Credit scores range from poor to excellent, with poor credit scores falling between 500 and 600 and excellent scores ranging from 781 to 850. Keep in mind that credit score rankings may vary slightly depending on the credit-scoring model used.

While a lack of credit scores can’t be used to determine insurance premiums in some states, such as Texas, insurers can use existing credit scores.[10] This means that insurers in Texas can reference credit scores when setting your rate.

In Dallas, full-coverage policy prices can vary depending on your credit score. On average, those with good credit scores (661–780) may pay less than those with poor credit scores (500–600). It’s important to note that other factors, like your driving history and vehicle type, may also affect individual premiums.

Dallas car insurance rates by driver age

Age can also affect how much you spend on car insurance, as insurers consider younger drivers who lack experience on the road to be at a higher risk of filing a claim. As a result, younger drivers typically pay higher premiums for their car insurance than older drivers.

You can review the following table to get an idea of how age can affect insurance rates in Dallas.

Is car insurance more expensive in Dallas?

The city you live in can affect how much you spend on car insurance. For example, while the average monthly premium in Dallas for liability-only coverage is $202 per month, in Wichita, Kansas, drivers pay a much lower average monthly cost of $151.

Several rating factors determine insurance prices, with the driver’s location being a big one, according to Lauren McKenzie, a senior agent at A Plus Insurance.

“Insurance companies rate policies based on their ZIP codes and the risk in each ZIP code and surrounding areas,” McKenzie explains. “For instance, a driver who lives in a heavily populated area most likely has a higher accident rate and will see higher insurance prices in that area. Drivers who live in smaller, not as heavily populated areas will have a lower amount of accidents and claims in that area, resulting in lower premiums.”

Crime rates, such as for vehicle theft and vandalism, play a role here too.

“Areas with higher crime rates make the insured a higher risk to be the victim of a crime, such as having their vehicle broken into or stolen,” McKenzie notes. “Living in those high-crime areas will result in an increase in premium because the insurance company considers that driver to live in a high-risk area, which makes them prone to more crime, or more accidents.”
