Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Atlanta

Full-coverage car insurance combines liability only with collision and comprehensive insurance, which cover additional damages to your vehicle. Collision insurance covers collisions with cars and other objects, like trees and fences. Comprehensive coverage pays for things like weather and vandalism.

“More than 1 million vehicle thefts were reported across the U.S. in 2022,” says Mark Friedlander, director of corporate communications for the Insurance Information Institute. “This very reasonable optional coverage also covers losses from vandalism, fires, weather hazards, and cracked windshields.”

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Speed is a significant contributing factor in traffic fatalities, which is one reason why insurers may consider it a costly mistake even if you weren’t involved in a collision.[2] Insurers view speeding as very risky behavior, as it increases the likelihood of an accident, so they’ll likely increase your rates to compensate for this added risk.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident

Since 2017, fatal car crashes have increased in Atlanta, while the total number of reported crashes have remained similar.[3] You don’t need to be in a major accident for your car insurance to go up. Even a single claim for an at-fault fender bender could cause your rate to increase. Most at-fault accidents will stay on your record and affect your premium for three years.[4]

Cheapest car insurance for teens

Teenagers are at a greater risk of accidents and fatal crashes than older drivers. Their inexperience, overconfidence, and distractions can increase their risk, which is why car insurance rates are often highest for this age group.[6]

Even with high rates, some teens can get lower premiums by staying on their parents’ plans, driving cars with high safety ratings, getting pay-per-mile insurance, or applying for good student discounts.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Atlanta

Many factors affect how much you pay for car insurance, but the insurer you choose is the most important. Many have unadvertised discounts that can help you save money. Others may price their rates low to combat the highly saturated market.

Consider these tips when shopping for the cheapest car insurance in Atlanta:

  • Raise your deductible. Low deductibles have higher premiums because your insurer is paying more money during a claim. Increasing your deductible can lower your rate by assuming more out-of-pocket expenses for a claim.

  • Bundle car insurance with another policy. Many insurers offer discounts when you have multiple policies with them. This could be with policies that include two vehicles or a bundle of auto and homeowners insurance.

  • Comparison shop. Getting new quotes each year can help you find the insurer offering the best rates for the auto coverage you need.

Atlanta car insurance quotes by credit tier

Georgia insurers are permitted to use credit scores as one of many factors influencing how they price a premium. However, it’s illegal for insurers to use it as the sole basis for making an underwriting decision.[7] Drivers with poor credit scores typically pay higher rates than drivers with excellent or good credit scores.

Is car insurance more expensive in Atlanta?

Altanta’s average car insurance rate is $380 per month, much higher than the Georgia state average of $314. Atlanta’s average rates are higher than other cities since it’s so large and densely populated — with inherently more risks than smaller cities.

With the exception of Decatur, Stone Mountain, and Lithonia, Insurify found that Atlanta’s average is higher than most other Georgia cities, including Savannah and Lawrenceville.

More cities in Georgia

Looking at other cities in Georgia, you’ll find lower auto rates in many popular cities. Savannah’s rates may be lower due to its compact and pedestrian-friendly city center. Lithonia, however, may be more expensive because it’s an Atlanta suburb that has limited public transportation options for commuters heading downtown.

CityAverage Monthly QuoteCompared to Atlanta
Augusta$288-36%
Columbus$281-37%
Decatur$55825%
Douglasville$354-21%
Lawrenceville$384-14%
Lithonia$52618%
Marietta$315-29%
Savannah$361-19%
Stone Mountain$49110%

Atlanta car insurance FAQs

Finding cheap car insurance can be difficult. Check out these answers to some commonly asked questions about car insurance in Atlanta.

  • How much is car insurance in Atlanta?

The average cost of car insurance in Atlanta is $380 per month. Drivers pay $293 per month for liability coverage and $446 per month for full coverage. Your average auto rates ultimately depend on your driving record, credit history, marital status, age, location, and more.

  • What are the best car insurance companies in Atlanta?

State Farm is the best car insurance company in Atlanta, with an IQ Score of 4.4, an A.M. Best financial strength rating of A++ (Superior), and a low average liability-only rate. It’s followed closely by Auto-Owners, with an IQ Score of 4.0 and an A.M. Best financial strength rating of A++.

  • Why is car insurance expensive in Atlanta?

Car insurance is so expensive in Atlanta because it’s prone to severe weather risks like tornadoes, flooding, and strong windstorms. This can cause significant damage to vehicles, so insurers price policies accordingly. Georgia is actually one of the most expensive states in the country for car insurance, with average rates of $314 per month.

  • Is Georgia a no-fault state?

No. Like most states, Georgia is an at-fault state, meaning that the driver responsible for an accident will be responsible for paying for the other driver’s injuries and damages.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
