Car insurance requirements in Louisiana

Louisiana is a pure comparative fault state.[3] It means you can collect financial compensation even if you were partly responsible for a car accident. The law helps ensure you’re covered if you make a mistake behind the wheel. But drivers usually have a one-year time limit on filing a lawsuit.

“Insurers pay up to twice the amount in claim payments for bodily injury claims and property damage claims in Louisiana than they do in most of the rest of the country,” says John Ford, deputy commissioner of public affairs for the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

Below are Louisiana’s minimum liability car insurance requirements:

CoverageMinimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

Though Louisiana doesn’t require these coverages, they can offer extra, useful protection for you and your vehicle.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance covers you when another driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough coverage.

Full coverage

Full coverage typically includes collision and comprehensive insurance to cover repairs or replacement after an accident, theft, fire, or other event.

If you drive for a rideshare company, rideshare insurance fills coverage gaps left by your personal car insurance and the rideshare company’s insurance.[4]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

An incident is an at-fault accident, speeding ticket, DUI, or another moving violation that can negatively affect your driving record and car insurance rates.

“At-fault accidents and violations are used in premium calculations because they are predictive of a driver’s risk level,” Ford says. A speeding ticket can raise rates more than $500 for liability insurance, while a DUI can add nearly $900 to your premiums.

“Each insurer treats incidents differently, but the overall frequency of incidents can raise premiums in a geographic area,” says Ford. “For example, cities with higher instances of auto theft would likely see higher premiums for comprehensive coverage relative to cities with lower instances of auto theft.”

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket

Drivers with speeding tickets pay almost five times as much for liability-only car insurance than good drivers with clean records. Affordable coverage can be difficult to find if you have a speeding ticket, but it’s not impossible. You need to take the time to compare car insurance quotes from multiple insurers.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident

An at-fault accident can lead to higher rates, but you can still find ways to keep your rates low. Look for an insurance company that offers an accident forgiveness program or specializes in serving high-risk drivers. Another option is to shop around, since insurance quotes for Louisiana drivers with an at-fault accident can vary quite a bit among insurers.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors

Car insurance rates follow a pattern as people get older. After age 35, rates usually drop as drivers gain experience and become more responsible. But around age 75, premiums start to go up again. Most of Louisiana’s seniors face high car insurance costs, on average, highlighting the importance of finding reliable, affordable auto insurance options.

Cheapest car insurance for teens

It’s no secret that getting car insurance as a teenager can be expensive. “Because teens have the least amount of driving experience and the highest rate of accidents of any demographic, they pay the highest average rates across the U.S.,” says Mark Friedlander, corporate communications director at the Insurance Information Institute.

Teenage drivers pay significantly more for auto insurance than Louisiana’s average. But plenty of teen-focused discounts are available, including good student discounts and student away-at-school discounts, which are available if a college student in your household is attending and residing at a school more than 100 miles from home without a vehicle.

Teens can also save money by staying on their parents’ insurance policies, driving a safe car, choosing a higher deductible, or buying an inexpensive older vehicle to avoid needing to pay for collision and comprehensive coverage.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Louisiana

Louisiana car insurance quotes by credit tier

Your credit score can affect how much you pay for car insurance in Louisiana. If you have a poor credit score, you’ll pay about twice as much for a policy as someone with an excellent or good credit score.

It’s worth noting that Louisiana was working on legislation prohibiting insurers from using your credit information to assign a rate classification.[6] The state Legislature referred the bill to the House Committee on Insurance in March 2022, but it didn’t advance beyond that stage or move closer to becoming law.[7]

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
